William Harrison: The Clipper Ship Captain

Our very own Steering Group Chair Stuart Bligh is delivering a talk for the The Friends of Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre - FOMA on Friday 14th March! Stuart tells the fascinating and touching tale of William Harrison: the clipper ship captain.

William Harrison was born in a village in Kent in 1833 and went to sea aged 17, becoming a master mariner aged 27. Stuart’s talk explains the research done to uncover William’s incredible but tragic story, including his early life, his family, and his career and voyages at sea. In doing so the talk highlights the many different ways in which anyone interested can unearth similar stories using archives and records, including those available online.

Stuart Bligh is a former County Archivist for Kent, and Head of Research and Information at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. He currently coordinates the Maritime Kent Special Interest Group for the Kent Archaeological Society.

Join Stuart and FOMA on Friday 14th March at 7pm.
