Welcome from the Editor
[fg][/fg]Welcome to the (slightly delayed) Summer issue of the Society Magazine. We have had a busy 2024 that included the opening of the Maidstone Museum Lives in our Landscapes Gallery, in which the Society played a pivotal role in funding and providing many of the artefacts for display.
During our 2024 excavation season, we drew inspiration from Dr. Brian Philp’s compelling presentation on his life’s archaeological work at the KAS Annual General Meeting in Maidstone. From April to June, the Society carried out excavations at Lees Court Estate, confidently examining two prehistoric monuments likely of Neolithic origin and, therefore, holding national importance.
In addition, we supported SHAL (Studying History & Archaeology in Lympne) in exploring a probable Roman fortification that once overlooked the port of Portus Lemanis during the Roman era. The next issue will feature more details about this exciting discovery.
There is much going on in Kent at present, including many projects and heritage events. So, enjoy the issue, and we look forward to receiving more articles for the next issue.
All the best,
Richard
