Romney Marsh Research Trust archive now available on Society website
Romney Marsh is a remarkably young part of the English coast. At the end of the last ice age, sea levels were over 100 metres lower than present and one could walk from Rye across the exposed floor of the English Channel to France. As the climate warmed and sea levels rose, so the Channel was flooded and the sediments that make up the marshland accumulated.
Romney Marsh.
To look into any of the many hundreds of drainage ditches criss-crossing the marsh is to catch a glimpse of an early history dominated by changes in sea level. To look up is to see a landscape that, over the last 4,000 years, has been moulded by many phases of human settlement and activity. This varied history is recorded in the sediments and landforms of the marsh, in its archaeology, and in a wealth of documentary evidence providing fascinating insights into the lives of people working and living on the Marsh since the Roman period.
The Romney Marsh Research Trust was formed in 1987 to study the history, archaeology and landscape history (or ‘geomorphology’) of Romney Marsh following the establishment of the Romney Marsh Research Group in 1985. Romney Marsh, one of the largest areas of coastal marshland in the UK, has a fascinating many-sided history starting at the end of the last ice age. Membership of the Friends of the Trust was dominated by members of the public and included local historians and archaeologists, as well as a diverse group of specialists from universities throughout the UK. The principal aim was to make the work of the Trust as widely available as possible. From its inception, we hosted events to publicise our research, to which all members were invited, including field demonstrations, lectures and walks. Research has also been also published in journals and the Trust’s own publications.
In 2012 the Trustees took the reluctant decision to wind down the activities of the Trust but decided to make as much of the research as possible available to the public. After a time hosted at rmrt.org.uk the research has now been made available on the Society website.
The Romney Marsh Research Trust should be acknowledged if information taken from the website is published elsewhere.

Irregulars
The Irregular was the newsletter for Friends of the Trust and kept them informed of the Trust’s activities as well as including articles of interest on Marsh-related subjects. The first Irregular was published in March 1985, before the establishment of the Trust, and recorded details of the activities of the Romney Marsh Research Group. It was then published in most years up to 1999 in A4 format of between six and twelve pages under the editorship of Jill Eddison. In 2000 Sheila Sweetinburgh took over as editor, the format was changed to an A5 booklet and, belying its name, was since produced regularly twice a year, each spring and autumn. In 2005 Alan Tyler replaced Sheila as editor; colour illustrations were first included in 2004 and a coloured cover first used in 2008.

Small ports
The Small Ports project was initiated by Helen Clarke, who was then chair of the Executive, in response to a suggestion by the Trustees that the Friends of the Trust should be encouraged to participate in research. The first meeting was held in January 2003 and the project ran for three years, led by Helen, Terry Burke and Gill Draper and involving over thirty friends.
Reports on the activities and achievements were included in Irregulars between 2003 and 2006 (issues 21 to 27). A summary includes minutes of the meetings, reports on the tithe map surveys, advice on how to go about researching and other sundry papers. Open
Annual reports
In accordance with the Trust Deed and under Charity Commission regulations the Trust has produced an annual report including the accounts which have been independently audited (up to 2006) or examined (from 2007) by an independent firm of chartered accountants. As well as a Trustees’ report and financial information many of these reports include information on the Trust’s activities during the year and reports on projects which the Trust had funded.
The report years are: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Events
The Trust organised a number of events each year for its Friends. These always included a Spring Lecture and a talk given at the AGM of the Friends plus, in most years, guided walks, field trips and study days.
