Inscriptions in the Churchyard, of Hartley, Kent

Stones in the Eastern and Southern parts of the Yard.
1. Head by East window (with Cherubs' heads &c)
Ann first the wife of Thomas CROHURST, yeoman, of the Parish of Stone, deceased, but late the wife of Edward THORPE of this parish, died February 7 1776 aged 85. Also the said Edward Thorpe died March ye 8 1779 aged 89.
2. Head (with cherub's face, scythe &c) Thomas UNDERHILL of this Parish, yeoman, died October 14 1765 aged 80. Also Elizabeth Underhill wife of Thomas Underhill died 11 May 1774 aged 79. Who had issue by Elizabeth his wife one daughter viz Mary.
3. Head James WICKENDEN of this Parish died February 23 1807 aged 62. Elizabeth his wife died September 17 1814 aged 85.
4. Head (by South Chancel wall) Dorothy wife of Richard GLOVER died January 24 1760 in her 77th year. Also Richard Glover of this Parish died September ye 30 1748 aged 68. He had issue by Dorothy his wife 2 sons and 6 daughters. Erected by his sons Richard and Francis.
5. Head William LOFT of this Parish died 7 June 1782 aged 75. Also Sarah Loft wife of the above died 1 May 1797 aged 79. He left Sarah his wife and two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary.
6. Cross Edward ALLEN 44 years Rector of this Parish died January 4 1870 in his 84th year. Also Ann his wife died on Easter Day 1849.
7. Cross Agnes daughter of the late Rev. Henry TRIMMER died April 4 1879.
8. Cross Mary wife of the Rev. W. WHITTON ALLEN died December 7 1889.
9. Head (By Porch Door) John KNOWLES late of this Parish died February 28 1782 aged 78. Also Sarah his wife died January 5 1781 aged 77.
10. Head William GOLDSMITH died 21 March 1803 aged 69. Ruth his wife died 8 September 1780 aged 40. Likewise two sons of the above - William died 11 February 1777 aged 6 years. Robert died 15 May 1799 aged 4 years. Left issue two sons and one daughter - Thomas, George and Mary.
11. Head Amelia daughter of William and Mary BENSTED died 3 July 1858 in her 27th year.
12. Head Mr William BENSTED of this Parish died 30 March 1836 aged 74. Mrs Elizabeth Bensted his wife died 11 September 1845 aged 85. Mr William Bensted son of the above died 19 April 1867 aged 79. Mary wife of the above died 15 December 1870 in her 76th year.
13. Head Mary Ann wife of the late Owen PARSONS and daughter of William and Elizabeth BENSTED died 11 November 1864 aged 78.
14. Head Ann wife of Edward BEST died 27 May 1791 aged 25. Hester his 2nd wife died 13 May 1834 aged 61. Edward son of the above Edward and Ann Best died 7 April 1843 aged 56. Mary daughter of Edward and Hester Best died 20 December 1847 aged 47. Edward Best died 2 June 1803 aged 43. Also Ann Best his mother died 19 September 1804 aged 84. Barnet son of the above Edward and Ann Best died 6 December 1806 aged 16.
15. Monument surmounted by an urn Thomas only child of Thomas and Harriet DEANE of this Parish died of Consumption 17 September 1868 in his 21st year. Harriet wife of Thomas Deane died 31 December 1883 aged 56.
16. Head Sal wife of William TREADWELL of this Parish died 11 October 1839 aged 66. Matilda daughter of the above died 23 June 1813 aged 3 years. Harriott wife of James HART and daughter of the above died 30 April 1874 aged 75. William Treadwell died 29 November 1852 aged 76. Eliza wife of Frederick OLIVER of Ash and daughter of the above died 11 August 1857 aged 52, Phillis wife of Thomas PIGGOTT and the daughter of the above died 13 September 1872 aged 68.
17. Head Rhoda HOGBEN daughter of William and Sal Treadwell of this Parish died 15 April 1883 aged 76.
18. Head Harriet daughter of William and Amelia COOPER of Fawkham died 13 September 1824 aged 3 years and 6 months. Alfred their son died 7 November 1832 aged 7 years and 11 months.
19. Head Mary wife of Mr William TREADWELL of this Parish died 4 October 1837 aged 30. Adieu my loved Partner, my children and friends
20. Head Mr William TREADWELL of this Parish, farmer, died 16 August 1849 aged 48.
21. Head Mr Francis TREADWELL of this Parish, farmer, died 18 November 1851 aged 93.
22. Head Elizabeth daughter of John and Margaret TREADWELL of this Parish died 10 October 1794 aged 17. Also Hannah wife of John PINK late of Gravesend died 11 October 1794 aged 32. Left issue 1 son and 1 daughter viz John and Mary.
23. Head Mrs Lydia THREADWELL wife of Francis Threadwell died 25 May 1814 aged 73. Also Francis Threadwell died 26 January 1819 aged 81. He was 40 years Clerk of this Parish.
24. Head John PAINE died 4 August 1872 aged 72. Ann his wife died 28 April 1871 aged 68. Erected by their children.
25. Head Mr Robert HAYES of this Parish died 13 December 1819 aged 59. Elizabeth his wife 13 January 1850 aged 82. James their son 10 November 1831 aged 29. Robert their son 26 April 1854 aged 62. Mary wife of the above Robert Hayes, junior, died 8 February 1853 aged 65.
26. Head Sacred / to the memory of Rebecca / wife of Thomas PAGE (of St Mary's / Le Strand London) who departed this / life the 12th of September 1797 / aged 28 years / she was daughter of Francis and / Lydia Treadwell of this Parish.
27. Head Margaret wife of Joseph OLIVER and daughter of Richard and Mary TREADWELL of this Parish died 25 December 1797 aged 42.
By the West end of the Church
28. Head Mary TULLOCH late of London 13 July 1844 aged 65. Left issue one son viz James.
29. Head Hannah wife of William OLIVER died 6 December 1800 aged 54. William her husband died 22 March 1819 aged 77. Left issue 2 sons viz William and George.
30. Head Eleanor wife of William OLIVER of Meopham died 8 May 1853 aged 75. William Oliver died 17 July 1865 aged 81.
31. Cross Erected by loving Relations and Friends to the memory of William ELCOMB who died February 1 1888 aged 77 having filled the office of Parish Clerk for 40 years. Maria and Harriet daughters of the above.
32. Cross Richard JONES died April 5 1859 aged 60
33. On the north side of the yard there is at present (1890) only one inscription viz on a wooden cross - Little May, youngest child of Joseph and Lucy JESSUP died October 24 1883.
End of Hartley Churchyard
Thorpe in the Registrum Roffense gives on page 1001 the following inscriptions in - Hartley Church
On the North side is a neat mural monument of white marble with this inscription -
34. Near this place lyes the body of James Burrow late of Kingsdown, gent. He departed this life 20 December 1728 aged 53 years. Also Elizabeth his wife and daughter of John Cox of Stansted, gent. She departed this life 14 February 1729 aged 49. And also two of their children viz James and Thomas.
On the top of the monument are these arms viz Azure, three fleurs de lis ermine, impaling sable a chevron argent between three altires of a stag fixed to the scalp of the second. Crest, on a wreath a falcon volant argent, jessed and belled, gorged with a ducal coronet or.
35. In the chancel on the South side is a grave stone of black marble with this inscription -
Here lyeth interred the body of Sarah, the wife of Edward Thorp of this parish who died the 6th of November 1747 aged 67 years.
