Some Monumental Inscriptions, with initial internment up to 1913 of St Margaret's Church, Rainham

Some Monumental Inscriptions, with initial internment up to 1913 of St Margaret's Church, Rainham, Kent. Recorded by D. E. & B. J. William 2015 & 2016.

We are grateful to the band of hardy parishioners, who on Saturdays, during the winter, cleared away undergrowth and pruned low growing branches, making access to many monuments much easier for us.) Some monuments that are no longer legible or missing were recorded by Bax and Rice in 1897, I have indicated these.

INTRODUCTION

The 100 foot, 15th century tower of St. Margaret's church dominates the centre of Rainham. the interior is broad, light and airy. It was once broader still, there is evidence outside in the south wall, that there was a south aisle as well as the present north aisle. Inside is a 14th century remodelling of a 13th century church, parts of the 13th century building remain.

For a description of the church see Rainham Church by Rev A.J. Pearman  Archaeologia Cantiana Vol 17 1887

INTERIOR OF THE CHURCH (WITH CONCISE WILLS AND PHOTOGRAPHS)

Part of the ceiling contains paintings of the badge of Edward IV. There is a considerable length of a 15th century richly carved screen and a fine 14th century oak parish chest. there are also large fragments of fine medieval wall paintings surviving. Between the chancel and chapel is a rather short 15th century chest tomb , claimed to be that of Sir Thomas St. Ledger, who married Edward IV's sister. He was beheaded in the reign of Richard III, his uncle! However the claim is disputed. St. Ledger was probably responsible for the painting on the ceiling of Edward IV's badge.
The north aisle contains the Tufton chapel, originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist, dominated by two large sculptures of Nicholas, Earl of Thanet and his brother George. the crypt, below contains about 50 Tuftons coffins, those of the Earls of Thanet complete with coronets! much of the interior has recently been carpeted, hiding all the brasses. (this is contrary to best practise, dust and grit will accumulate under the cleanest carpets, and increase wear.) as well as the brasses, there may be some ledgers hidden by the carpets.
