#FindsFriday: Possible late 18th century 'Witch Bottle'

It's #findsfriday!

Today we have something slightly different which recently came across our Curator Andy's desk; a possible late 18th century 'Witch Bottle'!

This bottle was found in a house in Margate which formerly served as a pub. The jug has been provisionally identified as lead glazed pearlware, with a tiny amount of cobalt added which gives the jug a blueish tinge in places. The decoration is hand painted over the glaze, imitating porcelain designs from China in the 18th century.

It may date to c. 1790 which would be a late example of a 'Witch Bottle'

Our curator is taking the jug to be X-Rayed on Monday, where hopefully it will reveal its contents!

For now, you can explore a 3D model of the jug (minus its base) on our Sketchfab - https://skfb.ly/pssKy

*3D model taken using a Revopoint Pop3 purchased through the kind bequest of Derek Gray and his family*
