Three sulungs at Cuxton to Rochester Cathedral with the church of St Michael, 880
Æthelwulf of Wessex grants to St Andrew’s and Bishop Swithwulf. Translation from Latin of Textus Roffensis, folios 141v-142v by Jacob Scott (pending review).
Æthelwulf of Wessex grants to St Andrew’s and Bishop Swithwulf three sulungs at Cuxton with the church of St Michael (880).
Campbell, no. 27. Fraudulent charter. Campbell: ‘This is a very doubtful charter. King Æthelwulf died in 858, but this charter is dated 880, the indiction agreeing. [...] the charter is [...] the work of a reckless compiler, who did not disturb himself to ascertain the dates of a king so well known as Æthelwulf, nor recall that 880 would fall in the reign of Ælfred the Great.’ The text begins with a green display initial ‘R’ and is marked by a black cross in the left margin. ‘ The boundaries, beginning at line six and finishing at line 12 of 142r, are written in Old English mixed with the Latin terms ‘in meridie’ (‘in the south’), ‘In occidente’ (‘in the west’), and ‘In aquilone’ (‘in the north’).

Concerning Cuxton:
Reigning perpetually, our lord Jesus Christ, I, Æthelwulf, king of the Saxons, will give for the remedy of my soul land to the church of Saint Andrew the Apostle of Christ and to Swithwulf the bishop some part in that place called Cuxton and the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. These are the boundaries of the three ploughs: In the east miodowæge, in the south Halling wara mearc up wið halles meres. In occidente briogoning wara mearc oð norðdune norðan. In aquilone east and langnes dune oð cinges mear’, ⁊ ut fram cingesmerce, oð ða aldan stræt east be ðare aldan stræte oð hlið, ⁊ þanan ut be ðan hliðe oð þa ea medewegan, that he may have and possess it and leave it to whomsoever he wills, living or dying, and after surrendering himself let us grant freedom from all servitude with all that properly belong to it, with the arrest of thieves and with all things that belong to the church of Saint Andrew with fields, forests, meadows, pastures, marshes, in the least and in the greatest known and unknown. If anyone, who is absent from our heirs and successors, endeavours to change or diminish the gift in any other way, let him know that he will be the first to incur the wrath of Almighty God, and that he will be deprived of a living blessing in this life, and will be subjected to a very new curse. He who shall keep this thing to be increased, and nothing shall be questioned against him, may he be blessed for ever and ever, amen. This letter was written in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ’s Incarnation 880, indictment 13. To these consenting witnesses and subscribers whose names are here below written.

Monumental Inscriptions of St Michael's Church, Cuxton
Monumental Inscriptions of St Michael's Church, Cuxton, noted by D.L. Williams 2011.
St Michael's Church, Cuxton from the North
St. Michael's Church stands on an elevated, steep site at the foot of the North Downs, with dramatic views across the Medway Valley. It has some Norman elements and was extended to the south in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1875 the churchyard was greatly extended to the north.
Many Romano – British remains have been found in the near vicinity, and the churchyard apparently contains buried structural remains, possibly a Romano – British mausoleum. The latter suggestion is reinforced by the dedication to St. Michael, often found on Pagan sites. The antiquarian, Sir William St. John Hope is said to have noted Roman foundations in his wife's grave on the day of her funeral! There are a few early 18th century headstone surviving, sadly all but one are illegible. Eight 18th / 19th century headstones lying on the bank opposite the south aisle seemed, at first glance, too eroded to be transcribed, but after a little effort seven of the eight inscriptions were read. Of these seven, four have related wills.
One bizarre episode at Cuxton was the presence, above ground, until 1868, of the coffin, enclosed in a closet, of Margaret Coosens, (died 1783). Her will sets out this desire to remain unburied, (fear of premature burial, it seems!); the will also supplies the inscription to be placed on the monument to her and her husband, which was formerly on the nave wall, the monument has now gone.
An unexpected find, in the 1875 extension, was the grave of Lieut. General Sir George Fowke, Engineer in Chief on the Western Front 1914 – 1918, and Adjutant General in France, 1916 – 1919. I would like to thank the Rector Rev. Roger Knight; Churchwarden, Mrs. Beaney, and members of the congregation for their encouragement and interest. Also to members of the congregation and residents who, with excellent timing, cleared excessive vegetation from many of the monuments in the 1875 extension.
SECTION A: Is that area north of the church and south and east of the path to the porch.
SECTION B: Is that area south of the east – west path and west of the path to the porch, and to
the south – west corner of the tower.
SECTION C: Is that area south of the tower and church.
SECTION D: The 1875 extension, is all that area north of the east – west path
Given the eroded condition of many monuments, there may be mistakes and omissions, for which I apologise. Will abstracts will be found in the Cuxton Notes file and also some photographs.

This well preserved headstone is difficult to photograph, seemingly always shaded.
It was obviously erected after the death of Henry's wife, Mary, in 1738, because the
exact year of Henry's death, 1724, and that of his daughter, Mary , 1734, were not
accurately remembered by the family, and recorded as 1725 and 1733, respectively.

Henry Clemonts, d. 1724. (Section A) was a Yeoman Farmer. His son Robert lies buried under a headstone at Halling. The present name of Clements Farm at Upper Halling, probably originated with this family.
Henry's R. Will is dated 10th December 1724. There is also an Inventory
To his wife Mary "all that I have in this world", for her lifetime, as long as she remains his widow. After her death to son Robert and daughter Mary. If his widow remarries, she is not to keep estate, but all goes to son and daughter.
Wife Mary is Executor. Brother in law, Richard Hatch, (also has a headstone at Halling), is appointed Trustee for children.
Henry signs with a mark
Witnesses: Thomas Edmeads and, mark of, Elizabeth Michell
The Inventory was drawn up on the 24th of January 1725, by Robert Wood and Richard Hatch, (both Yeomen of Halling).

The concrete path was cut rather close to Myrrha Hope's grave, which, on the south side
is covered by six inches of soil and turf, perhaps this was soil displaced by cutting the path.Sir William St. John Hope is said to have noticed Roman foundations in his wife's grave at
the funeral. A more fanciful story has him halting the ceremony, and jumping into the grave
to examine the archaeological remains!
